County Commission Reduces Meeting Schedule to Twice Monthly for 2026
The Saline County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to reduce its regular meeting schedule from three times per month to twice monthly beginning in 2026.
Commissioners unanimously approved Resolution 25-2439, which establishes the new meeting calendar and includes a provision allowing the county administrator to approve accounts payable between meetings when necessary to avoid late fees or take advantage of discounts.
County Administrator Philip Smith-Haines explained the change was discussed during a previous work planning session and follows the City of Salina's similar move to a twice-monthly schedule.
"Going to these two meetings a month and with the option if we need to have another meeting or a special meeting is there, I think it will ease our staff here from having to work on that and actually save a little bit of taxpayer money," said Commissioner Hay.
The resolution includes a delegation of authority to the county administrator position to approve time-sensitive accounts payable between meetings, with commissioners ratifying those actions at their next regular session.
Commissioner Weese noted the reduced schedule would also benefit residents who want to attend commission meetings by making it easier to plan their calendars.
The commission can still add special meetings as needed throughout the year.
The county clerk noted that one additional meeting will be required in 2026 for an election canvas related to a special city election on pit bull bans, tentatively scheduled for March 5, pending approval by the Secretary of State's office.
