Police Investigate Ongoing Scam Resulting in Over $200,000 in Losses

The Salina Police Department is investigating a large-scale scam that has resulted in more than $200,000 in losses for a 77-year-old West Salina man.

According to investigators, the scam began in May 2025 when the victim was contacted by two individuals who claimed he had won a lottery and a new vehicle. The suspects instructed the victim to send money in $500 increments using cash cards. The specific method of contact and the types of cards used remain under investigation.

A third individual later reached out to the victim, claiming he could assist in recovering the previously lost funds. Instead, the victim was further defrauded. Investigators say the victim was convinced to purchase a vehicle, sell it, and deposit the proceeds in a specific bank account, resulting in additional financial loss.

The combined loss exceeds $200,000. Police report that several details are still being verified as part of the ongoing investigation. The case remains open and under review.
