Winter Storm Warning: Arctic Outbreak to Bring Heavy Snow, Dangerous Cold to Saline County

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Saline County from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning, predicting an Arctic outbreak combined with heavy snowfall.

Snow is expected to fall in two rounds—the first Friday evening through Saturday morning, followed by a second round Saturday night into Sunday morning. Total snowfall in central Kansas, including Saline County, is forecast in the 6 to 8 inch range, with locally higher amounts possible.

Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly, especially during periods of heavier snowfall.

In addition to snow, dangerous wind chills ranging from -15°F to -25°F are expected from Friday night through Monday morning. These conditions increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia and can become life-threatening in a short period of time.

The National Weather Service has high confidence in the timing of both snowfall and extreme cold, with medium confidence on exact snowfall totals as bands of heavier snow may shift slightly.

Safety recommendations include avoiding unnecessary travel during periods of heavy snow, slowing down and increasing following distance when driving, dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, bringing pets indoors, and checking on vulnerable neighbors.
