Reminder: Salina Property Owners Must Clear Sidewalks Within 24 Hours of Snowfall
With winter weather upon us, it's a good time to review Salina's sidewalk snow removal requirements. According to city ordinances, property owners and occupants have specific responsibilities when snow and ice accumulate.
What the Law Requires
Under Salina City Code Section 8-401, property owners must remove snow and ice from adjacent sidewalks within 24 hours after the snow stops falling. This applies to all sidewalks that border your property.
If snow or ice becomes compacted and difficult to remove, property owners are required to spread sand, salt, or another suitable substance to make the walkway safe for pedestrians.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failure to clear sidewalks can result in the city removing the snow and charging the property owner for the cost, plus administrative fees. Property owners may also face municipal court citations.
For questions about sidewalk snow removal requirements, contact the City of Salina Public Works Department at (785) 309-5730.
